LOUISVILLE — #GivingTuesday, which this year falls on Tuesday, Nov. 29, is a global day of giving designed to harness the potential of social media and the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
Originally launched on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in 2012 as a philanthropic response to the consumer-driven holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday was enthusiastically adopted by the PC(USA) two years later in 2014.
“Our gifts combined is a powerful thing,” said the Rev. Dr. Diane Givens Moffett, president and executive director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. “Together, we can accomplish far more than any one of us can do alone.”
In 2022, the worldwide observance will once again give Presbyterians an opportunity to live into the call to be a Matthew 25 Church by responding to a world whose needs are perhaps greater than ever before in the wake of the unprecedented challenges of Covid.

“If anything positive has come out of the pandemic in the last few years, it is that the PC(USA) has been resilient in its support of ministries and programs,” said the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the PC(USA). “Presbyterians continue to answer the call with their hands and feet, prayers and financial support. God has called all of us in this particular time to be the church God wants us to be.”
All gifts given on Giving Tuesday will be directed to Shared Mission/Matthew 25 (25%), Office of the General Assembly (25%), and Special Offerings (50%).
“Giving Tuesday sets the stage for the church’s work in the coming year. We ask all Presbyterians and those committed to loving one another to help the church in this great time of need,” added Nelson.

Because it has become such a worldwide phenomenon, #GivingTuesday is not only a day when faithful Presbyterians are invited to make a financial gift but also a way to invite people to give who may not otherwise be involved in giving to the mission of the church.
“We are the church, together,” Moffett said, “and together we can make a difference.”
