Ecumenical & Interfaith

‘You will never see a Sikh throw a Muslim under the bus’

Synod School students taking part in the Rev. Sarah Trone Garriott’s class, A Theology of Interfaith Engagement, heard firsthand experiences Wednesday from six youth and young adults who participated earlier this month or in previous years in an interfaith youth leadership camp in Des Moines, Iowa.

Listen before you leap

Opportunities abound for interfaith engagement, a pastor with the Des Moines Area Religious Council told a virtual classroom full of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies’ Synod School students on Tuesday. All one must do is “step outside of what is normal for you and move into someone else’s reality.”

National Council of Churches ‘deeply disturbed’ by acts of violence against unarmed African Americans

The National Council of Churches (NCC) is grieved and deeply disturbed by the acts of violence that have been perpetrated against two unarmed African American men reported this week, even as most of the nation has remained at home sheltering in place. These incidents have reinforced the urgent need for us to address racism and white supremacy. The evil that results from racial hatred is exactly this: Black bodies lying dead in the streets.

Now is a time to imagine a bold new future

The Governing Board of the National Council of Churches, meeting during the Easter season 2020, sends greetings to all with the eternal message, “Christ is Risen!  Truly He is Risen!”   These joyful words are a balm, especially during these difficult days when the COVID-19 pandemic is sweeping over the country, and indeed the entire world, causing illness, death, and the disruption of lives and livelihoods. At the time of our meeting on Tuesday, 3,090,844 people worldwide have tested positive for the virus, and 213,273 have died.

New book encourages interfaith engagement between Christians and Muslims

For a long time, American Christians have been hearing a story about Islam. It’s a story about conflict and hostility, about foreigners and strangers. At the heart of this story is a fundamental incompatibility between the two religions going all the way back to their original encounters. According to that story, the only valid Christian response to Islam is resistance.
