Former Moderator the Rev. Charles A. Hammond dies at 86

The Rev. Charles A. Hammond, who in 1980 was elected Moderator of the 192nd General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, died May 3 in Pasadena, California, at the age of 86. His wife and daughter were at his side.

The Governing Board of the National Council of Churches, meeting during the Easter season 2020, sends greetings to all with the eternal message, “Christ is Risen!  Truly He is Risen!”   These joyful words are a balm, especially during these difficult days when the COVID-19 pandemic is sweeping over the country, and indeed the entire world, causing illness, death, and the disruption of lives and livelihoods. At the time of our meeting on Tuesday, 3,090,844 people worldwide have tested positive for the virus, and 213,273 have died.  

Caroline Kurtz, daughter of PC(USA) missionaries, wins Presbyterian Writers Guild’s Best First Book Award

Caroline Kurtz, a missionary kid who from age 5 grew up in Ethiopia with her parents and siblings, has been named winner of the Presbyterian Writers Guild’s biennial Best First Book Award for the best first book by a Presbyterian author written during 2018-2019. The Best First Book Award is co-sponsored by the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation and comes with a $500 cash prize.

PC(USA), A Corporation approved for $8.8 million forgivable loan

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), A Corporation President Kathy Lueckert announced Monday that the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Small Business Administration had approved an $8.8 million application for a forgivable loan that will cover the A Corp payroll for 2.5 months.
