As Jieun and I travel around Korea during the pandemic, we have discovered many moving stories about Presbyterian mission co-workers in Korea. Beginning in the 19th century, thousands of U.S. Presbyterian mission co-workers came to Korea to devote their lives to Christ and the Korean people. Many of them sacrificed the lives of their beloved family members and their own lives. When they breathed their final breath, they wanted to be buried in the land of Korea. Their love of Christ and Korean people truly touched the hearts of Korean people, and firmly set the foundation of present-day Korea.

Many female U.S. Presbyterian mission co-workers have served as presidents of the school. The school continued to educate Korean female leaders until 1982 when it became a school for both women and men. Although Hanil is a university for both genders, the current president is a female who is physically challenged. She is probably the only physically challenged female university president in Korea. The school provides education not only to Korean students but also students from other Asian countries.
Hanil University and Presbyterian Theological Seminary will celebrate its centennial anniversary this fall. The seeds of God’s grace that PC(USA) mission co-workers have planted in the Korean soil are growing and bearing many fruits in the Korean society as well as in the church. Of course, there are mistakes that mission co-workers have committed, but we admire their commitment, courage, and sacrifice. We are truly honored to carry on their legacy.

인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라                                 (마태복음 20:28)

그리스도의 이름으로 문안드립니다.

코로나 상황으로 동아시아의 다른 협력 교단들을 방문하지 못하는 관계로 저와 김지은 목사는 한국의 여러 지역을 방문하면서 미국 장로교 선교사님들의 감동적인 이야기들을 많이 들을 수 있었습니다. 1884년 이후 수 천명 이르는 미국장로교 선교사들이 한국에 와서 그들의 삶을 그리스도와 한국인을 위해 바쳤습니다. (남쪽에서 주로 활동했던 선교사들의 기록만 현재 남아있어 그 숫자가 천명 가까이 되니, 북쪽에서 주로 활동했던 선교사들까지 합치면 천명이 훨씬 넘을 것으로 추정됩니다.) 그들 중에는 자신은 물론 사랑하는 가족도 사고와 질병으로 조선 땅에 묻어야 했습니다. 혹 미국에 돌아간 후에도 마지막 숨을 거두며 한국에 묻히기를 원할 정도로 한국을 사랑했습니다. 그리스도와 한국인을 향한 그들의 사랑은 한국인의 마음을 감동시켰고 오늘날 한국의 밑거름이 되었습니다.

미국장로교 선교사들의 감동적인 이야기는 수도 없이 많지만, 그 중 한 예를 전하고 싶습니다. 전주의 한일장신대는 미국 남장로교단에서 파송된 서서평 선교사(Elizabeth J. Shepping)에 의해 1922년 세워졌습니다. 간호사이자 평생 독신으로 살았던 서서평선교사는 처음 간호사로 섬기다가 불우하거나 공부의 기회를 얻지 못했던 조선 여성들을 전도부인으로 교육시키기 위해 <이일성경학교>를 세웁니다. 본인도 어머니에게 버림받고 할머니 품에서 자랐던 아픈 추억이 있었기에 불우한 여성들을 향한 그녀의 애정은 각별했습니다. 그녀가 학생들에게 “성공이 아니라 섬김이다”(Not success, but service) 교훈은 유명합니다. 2017년 서서평선교사의 일대기를 그린 영화도 나왔습니다.

서서평선교사 뒤로 많은 여성 선교사들이 한일장신대 교장으로 섬기면서 여성 리더들을 양성하다가 1982년부터 한일장신대는 남학생도 받는 종합대학으로 발전합니다. 그러나 여성 교육을 목적으로 시작된 이 학교의 전통은 여전히 지속되어 지금도 한국에서는 유일하게 여성이며 장애인 총장인 채은하 박사께서 총장으로 계십니다. 또한 신학뿐 아니라 사회복지학과로 유명해 한국 학생은 물론 다른 아시아 학생들도 유학을 하고 있습니다.

한일장신대는 올 가을 창립 백 주년 기념을 준비하고 있습니다. 미국장로교 선교사들이 한국 땅에 뿌린 하나님의 자비의 씨앗들이 이렇게 자라나 교회는 물론 한국 사회에서 열매를 맺고 있습니다. 물론, 사람이 하는 일이 다 그렇듯, 미국장로교 선교사들이 실수를 한 것들도 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들의 헌신, 용기와 열정을 마음 깊이 존중하고 감사하며, 부족한 저희가 그들의 뒤를 잇게 된 것을 영광스럽게 생각합니다.
