Your generosity allows the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People (SDOP) to support initiatives that push back against oppression and break down the structures and systems that perpetuate poverty and racism. Together, we partner with low-income communities and people who want to change their lives, like the Gullah Farmers Cooperative Association in South Carolina.
The Gullah are descendants of Africans who were enslaved in the Lowcountry of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.
The farm co-op was founded in 2010 in response to unfair market practices faced by Gullah Farmers, who received below-market prices for their high-quality products. Families remained trapped in generational poverty. Many even lost their small farms.
By selling in larger volumes, the co-op can compete with big-box farm producers. That means Gullah farmers are paid fair prices so they can sustain their livelihood and carry on their community’s agricultural traditions
Like SDOP’s support of the Gullah co-op, all our work supports ministries of dignity, self-reliance and empowerment as directed by the General Assembly — and it’s all made possible by you.
