Looking Forward to Lent

Tread lightly Though we are still in the season of Advent, I know that some churches plan far ahead, so I wanted to make the 2011 "Tread Lightly for Lent" calendar early this year.

If you are looking for a way to introduce earth care to your church, or looking for a way to expand environmental practices in your life or church, "Tread Lightly for Lent" is a helpful resource.

As part of the reflective season of Lent, Environmental Ministries is offering “Tread Lightly for Lent,” a calendar that encourages Presbyterians to learn about eco-justice issues and take action on the issues of waste, energy, water, consumption, and food.  Each day in the season of Lent has a topic to learn about or a suggested action.  If you would like to use individual days in church bulletins or on a church website, you can cut and paste from the Environmental Ministries website.  The full calendar will be available in January 2011.

Also, the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center is offering a new curriculum for churches that are interested in exploring care for creation during the Lenten season.  The curriculum inspires churches to use prayer, fasting, and alms-giving to care for God's earth.  Called "Lent 4.5" the title refers to the 4.5 acres that each person would be given if the earth was divided equally.  It currently takes 22.3 acres to maintain an average American lifestyle.  To learn more about the curriculum and place an order go to http://www.lent45.org/.
