Morning Psalm 67

1May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
2that your way may be known upon earth,
your saving power among all nations.
3Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

4Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth. Selah
5Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

6The earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, has blessed us.
7May God continue to bless us;
let all the ends of the earth revere him.

Morning Psalm 150

1   Praise the Lord!
     Praise God in his sanctuary;
          praise him in his mighty firmament!
2   Praise him for his mighty deeds;
          praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

3   Praise him with trumpet sound;
          praise him with lute and harp!
4   Praise him with tambourine and dance;
          praise him with strings and pipe!
5   Praise him with clanging cymbals;
          praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
6   Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
     Praise the Lord!

First Reading Isaiah 47:1-15

1   Come down and sit in the dust,
          virgin daughter Babylon!
     Sit on the ground without a throne,
          daughter Chaldea!
     For you shall no more be called
          tender and delicate.
2   Take the millstones and grind meal,
          remove your veil,
     strip off your robe, uncover your legs,
          pass through the rivers.
3   Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
          and your shame shall be seen.
     I will take vengeance,
          and I will spare no one.
4   Our Redeemer — the LORD of hosts is his name —
          is the Holy One of Israel.
5   Sit in silence, and go into darkness,
          daughter Chaldea!
     For you shall no more be called
          the mistress of kingdoms.
6   I was angry with my people,
          I profaned my heritage;
     I gave them into your hand,
          you showed them no mercy;
     on the aged you made your yoke
          exceedingly heavy.
7   You said, “I shall be mistress forever,”
          so that you did not lay these things to heart
          or remember their end.

8   Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures,
          who sit securely,
     who say in your heart,
          “I am, and there is no one besides me;
     I shall not sit as a widow
          or know the loss of children” —
9   both these things shall come upon you
          in a moment, in one day:
     the loss of children and widowhood
          shall come upon you in full measure,
     in spite of your many sorceries
          and the great power of your enchantments.

10  You felt secure in your wickedness;
          you said, “No one sees me.”
     Your wisdom and your knowledge
          led you astray,
     and you said in your heart,
          “I am, and there is no one besides me.”
11  But evil shall come upon you,
          which you cannot charm away;
     disaster shall fall upon you,
          which you will not be able to ward off;
     and ruin shall come on you suddenly,
          of which you know nothing.

12  Stand fast in your enchantments
          and your many sorceries,
          with which you have labored from your youth;
     perhaps you may be able to succeed,
          perhaps you may inspire terror.
13  You are wearied with your many consultations;
          let those who study the heavens
     stand up and save you,
          those who gaze at the stars,
     and at each new moon predict
          what shall befall you.

14  See, they are like stubble,
          the fire consumes them;
     they cannot deliver themselves
          from the power of the flame.
     No coal for warming oneself is this,
          no fire to sit before!
15  Such to you are those with whom you have labored,
          who have trafficked with you from your youth;
     they all wander about in their own paths;
          there is no one to save you.

Second Reading Hebrews 10:19-31

19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

26For if we willfully persist in sin after having received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy “on the testimony of two or three witnesses.” 29How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace? 30For we know the one who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Gospel Reading John 5:2-18

2Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. 3In these lay many invalids — blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” 8Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” 9At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.

Now that day was a sabbath. 10So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” 11But he answered them, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” 12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. 14Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.” 18For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.

Evening Psalm 46

1   God is our refuge and strength,
          a very present help in trouble.
2   Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
          though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
3   though its waters roar and foam,
          though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah

4   There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
          the holy habitation of the Most High.
5   God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
          God will help it when the morning dawns.
6   The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
          he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7   The LORD of hosts is with us;
          the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8   Come, behold the works of the LORD;
          see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9   He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
          he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
          he burns the shields with fire.
10  “Be still, and know that I am God!
          I am exalted among the nations,
          I am exalted in the earth.”
11  The LORD of hosts is with us;
          the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Evening Psalm 93

1   The LORD is king, he is robed in majesty;
          the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength.
     He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
2        your throne is established from of old;
          you are from everlasting.

3   The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
          the floods have lifted up their voice;
          the floods lift up their roaring.
4   More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
          more majestic than the waves of the sea,
          majestic on high is the LORD!

5   Your decrees are very sure;
          holiness befits your house,
          O LORD, forevermore.
