¹   Come down and sit in the dust,
          virgin daughter Babylon!
     Sit on the ground without a throne,
          daughter Chaldea!
     For you shall no more be called
          tender and delicate.
²   Take the millstones and grind meal,
          remove your veil,
     strip off your robe, uncover your legs,
          pass through the rivers.
³   Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
          and your shame shall be seen.
     I will take vengeance,
          and I will spare no one.
⁴   Our Redeemer — the LORD of hosts is his name —
          is the Holy One of Israel.
⁵   Sit in silence, and go into darkness,
          daughter Chaldea!
     For you shall no more be called
          the mistress of kingdoms.
⁶   I was angry with my people,
          I profaned my heritage;
     I gave them into your hand,
          you showed them no mercy;
     on the aged you made your yoke
          exceedingly heavy.
⁷   You said, “I shall be mistress forever,”
          so that you did not lay these things to heart
          or remember their end.

⁸   Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures,
          who sit securely,
     who say in your heart,
          “I am, and there is no one besides me;
     I shall not sit as a widow
          or know the loss of children” —
⁹   both these things shall come upon you
          in a moment, in one day:
     the loss of children and widowhood
          shall come upon you in full measure,
     in spite of your many sorceries
          and the great power of your enchantments.

¹⁰  You felt secure in your wickedness;
          you said, “No one sees me.”
     Your wisdom and your knowledge
          led you astray,
     and you said in your heart,
          “I am, and there is no one besides me.”
¹¹  But evil shall come upon you,
          which you cannot charm away;
     disaster shall fall upon you,
          which you will not be able to ward off;
     and ruin shall come on you suddenly,
          of which you know nothing.

¹²  Stand fast in your enchantments
          and your many sorceries,
          with which you have labored from your youth;
     perhaps you may be able to succeed,
          perhaps you may inspire terror.
¹³  You are wearied with your many consultations;
          let those who study the heavens
     stand up and save you,
          those who gaze at the stars,
     and at each new moon predict
          what shall befall you.

¹⁴  See, they are like stubble,
          the fire consumes them;
     they cannot deliver themselves
          from the power of the flame.
     No coal for warming oneself is this,
          no fire to sit before!
¹⁵  Such to you are those with whom you have labored,
          who have trafficked with you from your youth;
     they all wander about in their own paths;
          there is no one to save you.

¹⁹Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), ²¹and since we have a great priest over the house of God, ²²let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. ²³Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. ²⁴And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, ²⁵not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

²⁶For if we willfully persist in sin after having received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. ²⁸Anyone who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy “on the testimony of two or three witnesses.” ²⁹How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace? ³⁰For we know the one who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” ³¹It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

²Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. ³In these lay many invalids — blind, lame, and paralyzed. ⁵One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. ⁶When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” ⁷The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” ⁸Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” ⁹At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.

Now that day was a sabbath. ¹⁰So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” ¹¹But he answered them, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” ¹²They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” ¹³Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. ¹⁴Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.” ¹⁵The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. ¹⁶Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath. ¹⁷But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.” ¹⁸For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.
