Second Tuesday Briefing, June 12, 2012

We are pleased to have Reverend Bill Somplatsky-Jarman as our presenter for the Second Tuesday Briefing at the Office of Public Witness (OPW) on June 12, 2012. Bill is the Coordinator of Social Justice Ministries, and also the Associate for Mission Responsibility Through Investment (MRTI) and Environmental Ministries for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The MRTI Committee implements the church’s social investment policies for its over $7.5 billion of assets managed by its Foundation and Board of Pensions. He has coordinated dozens of corporate dialogues, spoken at many shareholder meetings, and authored several articles and study guides on corporate responsibility and environmental issues.  Special present and past responsibilities include: Board of Directors of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR); Board of Directors of Ceres; Board of Directors of the National Labor Committee; represented the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, World Council of Churches (WCC) Climate Change Program Steering Committee, and has been a member of WCC delegations to the United Nations Climate Change negotiations since 1995. Bill was also treasurer and past chairperson of the Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches of Christ.

Bill holds a B.A. cum laude from Bethany College (West Virginia) with distinction in religion, and a Masters in Divinity from Yale University Divinity School with emphasis in social ethics, where he was awarded the Mersick Prize for effective public address, especially in preaching.

Bill will address the topic: “Should the Church Make Money from Human Rights Abuses?”
