The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (UDTS) is an ecumenical seminary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Its purpose is to advance the mission and ministry of the church of Jesus Christ by preparing women and men for faithful, compassionate and effective pastoral and lay ministry in congregations. The seminary seeks to live as an academy of the church and a community of Christians to the glory of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
History and Location
UDTS is located in Dubuque, Iowa, a comfortable, family-oriented community on the Mississippi River.
Founded in 1852 as an outreach to German settlers pouring into the Midwest, the then-named Van Vliet Seminary provided practical theological instruction to prepare pastors and evangelists. The institution eventually grew to include an undergraduate college and in 1920 changed its name to the University of Dubuque. In 2007, Dubuque Seminary was approved by the accrediting agency (A.T.S.) for a distance M.Div. degree, where the majority of the M.Div. courses are offered online. The accredited distance M.A.M.C. was approved in 2011.
The picturesque campus, featured in the movie Field of Dreams, includes traditional red brick classroom buildings, a popular athletic complex and a state-of-the-art technology center. Seminary students live in modern townhouses in Seminary Village. Ground breaking was held in May 2011 for a new Performing Arts and Campus Center . Five colleges and two seminaries in the city offer a rich variety of educational and cultural opportunities. Children of seminarians can walk to excellent neighborhood schools and play in the many beautiful parks in Dubuque.
