PW supports silent auction
By Jen Lenard-Benson
As the 7 pm closing time approached on Friday, a few women hovered around the silent auction space in the exhibit hall to be sure they went home with “their” item.
The first silent auction at a PW Churchwide Gathering drew bids from 725 people. Knowing the Mission Pledge, Birthday Offering and Thank Offering would benefit from the auction doubtlessly drove bidding higher on the one-of-a-kind pieces, which included handcrafted shawls, lap blankets, and jewelry. The auction raised $8,089. These additional funds will support mission partnerships and projects, leadership enhancement, justice and peace advocacy, publishing ministry, and domestic and international grants for groups and organizations that address the needs of women and girls. Funds directed to the PW Mission Pledge totaled $6,066, while the Birthday Offering received $884 and the Thank Offering $1,139.
Individuals, groups, circles, presbyteries, synods and Churchwide Coordinating Team (CCT) committees donated 90 items for the silent auction to help raise money to expand PW mission and ministry.
Several items drew significant interest, including a basket filled with goodies from Alaska (donated by the PWP of Yukon) and the handmade stoles used during plenary here at the Churchwide Gathering (donated by the Churchwide Gathering Plenary Committee). The quilts created by Penny Sisto for the 2004–2005 Horizons Bible study What She Said: Quotable Women in Scripture by Dale Lindsay Morgan, donated by Presbyterian Women In the PC(USA), Inc. national staff, secured the highest bids for the auction.
Volunteers who helped to staff the space shared that many women were excited about this new addition to the Gathering.
Vicki Sutton, PWP moderator in Western Colorado and auction volunteer shared, “It was nice to see things from different parts of the United States—this is a great idea!”
Every item in the auction received a bid, indicating interest in events such as these.
The Gathering Planning Team (GPT), PW Live! GPT Committee, as well as the CCT Funds Development Committee agreed to implementing the auction at the Gathering in hope of raising more money—and awareness—for PW Celebration Giving programs.
Thank you to each item donor, purchaser and volunteer for supporting this first-time event!
