China Earthquake

Saturday morning, April 20, 2013, an earthquake of 7.0 on the Richter scale hit rural areas of Lushan County, Sichuan Province, China.  Power and communication lines were cut and roads were blocked.

ACT Alliance has provided information that rescuers are struggling to get through to the worst-affected areas.  More than 1.5 million people have been affected, with at least 181 deaths, 23 people missing, and more than 11,000 injured.  With communications down, the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

Luke Asikoye, Associate for International Disaster Response with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, said that PDA will support our partner the Amity Foundation in coordination with ACT.

Staff from the Amity Emergency Response Team (AERT) are in the affected area and, together with the local partner Sichuan Zhigong Party, are conducting an assessment of needs.  Amity has already purchased basic emergency materials such as bottled water, bread, biscuits and tents to distribute to those most in need.  Rehabilitation and reconstruction activities are foreseen.

PC(USA) does not have any mission personnel in the area affected by the earthquake.

How You Can Help

You can stand in the “GAP” for disaster survivors and help the church in this response.

Give:  Share your financial blessings by designating gifts to DR000138 - China.
Individuals may give through their local Presbyterian congregation, online, or by mailing a check to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) P.O. Box 643700 Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700; include DR000138 – China on the memo line.  Gifts for PDA can also be given by texting “PDA” to 20222 to donate $10.

Act:  Sign up to receive PDA RIN (Rapid Information Network) emails to be aware of current responses and urgent needs you can share with your congregation.  Following many disasters, Gift of the Heart Kits offer necessary supplies to those in need.  Consider assembling kits so they will be available when needed.

Pray: Please pray for those who are serving in rescue and recovery operations in the early days of the response, for those who will need to rebuild their homes and lives, and for those who have lost loved ones.  Pray that through the response of the faith community, the people and communities impacted by the earthquake and those offering assistance will be reminded of the faithful hope found in Christ.
