Letter from Sara Baltonado Mahecha in Costa Rica

September 2012

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza

Greetings from the Universidad Bíblica Latinoamericana (UBL—Latin American Biblical University) in Costa Rica. In June of this year we completed 13 years of being professors at this important theological education university, which serves several countries in Latin America. It is a great privilege for us to be a part of the theological education program.

In July the UBL received Dr. Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, Director of the School of Divinity at Harvard, as the 2012 guest lecturer for the annual Cátedra MacKay program. Dr. Schüssler Fiorenza spoke on the theme “Power, Diversity and Religion: A Biblical-Theological Criticism from Kyriarchyto more than 100 individuals during three evenings.

The annual Cátedra Mackay was named after the former president of Princeton Seminary, John MacKay, after his death in 1983 and in recognition of his years of theological influence in the world. John MacKay first visited the UBL in 1946 and became a regular guest speaker.

Nancy Cardoso with colleagues

It is our pleasure to introduce the new UBL president from 2013. The Board of Directors of the UBL welcomed Dr. Nancy Cardoso Pereira of Brazil (on the left-hand side in the photo). Dr. Cardoso Pereira, a Methodist with a long history in academic and community work, will assume the position of president of the UBL.

Outgoing President Violeta Rocha (on the right-hand side, wearing glasses) stated: “For the UBL it is extremely important to have in the position of president an individual who can widen our horizons in the areas of educational program planning in the future, and who has an external vision and experiences from a larger university and who can support us in the educational areas of theology and the Bible.” The UBL appreciates the eight years of commitment by outgoing president Violeta Rocha and we are pleased she will continue with us as a professor of Bible.

In Christ,

Sara and Guido Mahecha
