YAV in Atlanta
DOOR Atlanta
Blog
I'm going to be a YAV in Atlanta, Georgia, 2011-2012. As well as being a YAV, I'll also be a "Dweller" as part of the DOOR program. This means I'll be living in a house with other YAVs and "Dwellers" as an intentional Christian community, living simply and attempting to study and carry out Jesus' ministry in our daily lives.
My volunteer placement is at the Central Presbyterian Outreach and Advocacy Center (OAC), where I will primarily work one-on-one with the homeless clients -- arranging paperwork to help them get IDs, public transportation passes, etc. I may also have the opportunity to do some work involving advocacy and public policy change for Atlanta's homeless population.
I will be in Atlanta this summer as well, before my YAV year begins, working with DOOR's "Discover" program. This is the summer program that provides short-term mission trip projects (for youth groups, etc.) with the urban agencies that DOOR is connected with. Along with some of my fellow YAVs, I'll be working directly with the youth and helping facilitate these projects.
The Young Adult Volunteer program is a year-long service program for young adults between ages 19 and 30. Read more about the YAV program here
