YAV in New Orleans

Lauren Wright is 23 years old, and a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Graphic Design. She has felt led to serve in the YAV program since her sophomore year of college when a YAV participant came to her campus ministry and spoke about their experience. She decided to become a YAV because it was a great way to combine her love for mission work, art, and design. She is working for CHART (Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology) in New Orleans. She is an investigative journalist in the bayou area, and her job is to bring light to environmental issues that are being swept under the rug. Toxic waste is being dumped in the wetlands, and it is getting into peoples’ drinking water. She goes to these areas, gets to know the people, and helps them get their voices heard. CHART also does evacuations in the case of a hurricane, and she will be involved in any of those efforts as well.
The Young Adult Volunteer program is a year-long service program for young adults between ages 19 and 30. Read more about the YAV program here
