Hi everyone, I am 24 years old and from a town in Northern Ireland called Larne. Larne is about 20 miles away from Belfast. In 2009 I graduated from University of Ulster with a degree in Communication with Counseling. After that I began working in a project ran by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland which is based in a disadvantaged area of Belfast. The project is called Friendship House and here I worked with children and young people running after schools clubs and homework clubs. The time I have spent in Friendship House confirmed my calling to work within disadvantaged communities. I am passionate that all young people will be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
This year I am heading to Nashville, Tenn. and to work alongside the Martha O'Bryan Center. The Martha O'Bryan center's mission is: "On a foundation of Christian faith, the Martha O'Bryan Center empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty to transform their lives through work, education, employment and fellowship." I will be based in Stratford High School working with students to improve their education. This is a wonderful opportunity and I am thankful to God for leading me to this stage in my journey.
The Young Adult Volunteer program is a year-long service program for young adults between ages 19 and 30. Read more about the YAV program here
