A health program with a holistic approach
The Jinishian Memorial Program (JMP) in Lebanon operates a health program for families and individuals with little to no income, providing reduced-cost or free medications to maintain a healthy lifestyle or to prevent life threatening illnesses. Beyond the distribution of medications, the JMP health program staff also uses a holistic approach to health and medicine. Nurses and social workers work together with clients, individually or in groups, to meet the clients’ health and wellness needs.
One woman participated in an eight-month group session on developmental health for women. As a result of the group session, she became so enthusiastic about the guidance she received on leading a healthy lifestyle that she lost 10 kilograms. She was aglow with happiness and extremely proud of her achievement by the end of the program.
Another woman suffering from years of depression participated in the group session for more than eight months. The support she received from the group gave her the confidence and motivation required to lead a more productive and fulfilled life. Shortly after the group session she found a part-time job in sales.
A client with classic signs of angina pectoris, chest pain, was urged by the JMP nurse during an individual consultation to consult with a heart specialist. The client returned shortly after the medical checkup feeling extremely grateful, because he received emergency treatment. His physician informed him he had miraculously avoided a lethal heart attack. The client continued to receive follow-up treatment involving diagnostic and therapeutic tests. He is currently in stable condition.
These are only three examples of the impact the health program has in the community. JMP Lebanon provides medication and health services to more than 2,500 individuals annually.
