The Seven Works of Mercy at Diakonie Neuendettelsau
Live Scripture
If we are to become Word-shaped communities and individuals, Scripture must transform the way we live. So the last practice is an invitation to live Scripture.
Be Doers
We are to be not only hearers of the Word, but doers also.
See the Spirit at work
Living the Word helps us see how the Spirit works through our reading, praying, studying and memorizing of Scripture to make us into disciples. This is the most exciting, and scary, of the practices.
Obey scripture
This includes obeying the demands of Scripture with regard to living the Christian life, which also means having our imaginations, our thoughts, our feelings shaped by the Word of God.
Assess our lives
The daily practice of examen, a discipline of self-examination and repentance is one way to assess how well our lives are embodying the Word.
Make it a regular part of church meetings to ask how your work can embody the Word you’re hearing preached in worship.
The Word in action
Presbyterians are doers of the word. We think about how scripture and the living Word Jesus Christ shape our understanding of various issuea.
