Letter from Marian McClure
Note: This letter was sent to retired and current missionaries regarding the formation of the IARP.
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
I am writing to share news of an action by the Executive Committee of the General Assembly Council. As recommended by the Final Report of the Independent Committee of Inquiry, a new Independent Abuse Review Panel has been created to investigate reports of physical and sexual abuse where either 1) the accused was formerly under appointment by WMD and is not currently under appointment or 2) the abused individual (adult or child) was in the field because of WMD appointment.
It may be disturbing to receive news of this investigation and its possible implications for the environment in which your children attended school. It is, of course, imperative that the panel get to the truth. Where abuse did happen, uncovering it has the power to bring healing to wounded individuals and to the body of Christ. Therefore, the church is committing resources toward that end.
You and I share a special bond as co-laborers with Christ in God's mission. Like you, my heart is wrenched by the need for this new investigation. In its efforts to get as complete a picture as possible of the boarding-school environments, the Independent Abuse Review Panel is trying to contact former students. Therefore, I am asking you to assist the panel by taking a few minutes to provide information about your child's/children's current whereabouts.
Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Dr. Marian McClure
