Experiencing God -- Gregory Bentley
On January 1, 2012, I began a new call as the fifth pastor of Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama. Entering this call, borrowing from Stephen Covey's Seven Habits, I wanted to begin with the end in mind. What is God calling Fellowship to be? What is my role in the process? How do we get started? While wrestling with these questions through prayer and conversation with friends and colleagues, it became clear to me that spiritual formation and leadership development would be key areas of ministry to address immediately.
I sought to design a process that would lead the congregation, particularly the leadership, into an intentional, daily walk with Jesus. We started with Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby (the workbook and not the book). I led both the session and the diaconate in this twelve week study and the results have been tremendous. There is a noticeable increase in the energy and enthusiasm of the people; conversation is seasoned with insights and concepts gleaned from the study; after Sunday service, the people are staying around fellow-shipping with one another instead of heading straight to their cars and going home. Moreover, session meetings are highly productive with a sense of pulling together for the common good. One member told me, "Rev, Experiencing God has helped me to see that God has always been with me, even when I didn't love myself." Now, I'm not saying that all of the foregoing is happening ONLY because of Experiencing God but it is a major part of it.
The "graduates" of Experiencing God are so sold on it that they have become evangelists to the whole congregation to get involved in the study. And their spreading the good news is bearing fruit because the adult Sunday School class has just finished the course and two more classes are in progress.
If you are looking to get people excited about the Lord and their daily walk with him, I highly recommend Experiencing God.
